Thyroid Ultrasound: When and Who Needs It

Ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid ultrasound is used both for initial diagnosis and for assessing changes during treatment or after surgery. You can have a thyroid ultrasound in Osh at the MEDXPERT diagnostic center.

A thyroid ultrasound is ordered in cases of:

  • decreased mental and physical activity, lethargy, weakness and fatigue;
  • sudden mood swings, tearfulness, depression, as well as excessive excitability or aggressiveness;
  • sleep disorders;
  • unexplained changes in weight (both gain and loss);
  • rapid heartbeat or slowed heart rate;
  • increased blood pressure;
  • discomfort when wearing a "turtleneck" sweater; visible "thickening" of the neck;
  • a feeling of difficulty breathing, shortness of breath;
  • hair loss, dry skin, sweating;
  • constipation or frequent bowel movements, frequent urination;
  • in girls and young women - menstrual disorders;
  • a family history of thyroid disease in close relatives.

For prevention, everyone over 40 should have a thyroid ultrasound. In addition, this examination is on the list of mandatory tests for women at the pregnancy planning stage.

The examination is performed lying down. No special preparation is required. The examination takes 15 minutes.

The ultrasound doctor's report is given immediately after the examination is completed.

This examination is safe, painless and has no contraindications. Thyroid ultrasound is ordered for pregnant women and children, because ultrasound is harmless, does not damage body tissues and does not cause long-term effects.

The only limitation may be damaged skin (a burn, an open wound), as well as pustules at the examination site.
