The Importance of a Comfortable Temperature and Proper Clothing for Newborns
Parents always strive to ensure the comfort and safety of their newborn baby. But what temperature should be maintained at home, and how should you dress your baby so that they feel just right? This article is devoted to the optimal temperature and proper clothing for newborns, taking medical recommendations into account, to make caring for your baby as comfortable and safe as possible.
Optimal Temperature and Proper Clothing: Expert Recommendations
The American Academy of Pediatrics defines a comfortable temperature for newborns as 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit (20-22 degrees Celsius). For a premature baby – 23-25 degrees. Humidity should be in the range of 40-60%. This temperature range is considered optimal for creating a safe and comfortable environment for an infant during sleep.
How to Dress a Newborn Properly
For your baby to feel comfortable and safe, it is necessary to dress them properly:
Layers of clothing: Dress your infant in layers so you can easily regulate their temperature. Start with underwear, then add a romper or a swaddle, and, depending on the room temperature, add a thin romper or blanket if needed.
Recommended:
footless sleepsuit
- it does not restrict the baby's movements, even when it becomes a little small. And at 5-7 months, such a romper is excellent for encouraging belly crawling. To do this, place the baby on a floor with a smooth, slippery surface, such as laminate or linoleum. The baby's hands and feet are bare, so the infant can push off the floor with bare feet and pull themselves forward with their palms. This way the tummy slides forward;
- a bodysuit, if it is warm at home
- bare knees do not slip on the floor, and the baby will try to get up on all fours;
- a bodysuit worn over tights
- this option suits a cool floor. The bodysuit keeps the tights from slipping down during movement. Thanks to this, the baby can comfortably move their legs while crawling;
- tights with non-slip knees
- these help if it is not possible to provide a non-slip surface while the infant is learning to crawl on all fours. If there is a crawling mat at home, you can do without them;
- socks that are not narrow or tight
you can also choose socks with toys. They encourage the baby to grab their feet with their hands, thereby stretching the lower back.
How Not to Dress Your Baby at Home
Items that are not recommended:
- anti-scratch mittens In my opinion, an infant should have the most varied tactile experience possible from the very first days. For this, the palms should be uncovered;
- a hat at home can lead to overheating, especially if the baby is swaddled and the temperature at home is higher than recommended;
a footed sleepsuit that is already too small for the infant. A mother can easily check whether the size still fits the baby or whether it is time to put on a sleepsuit one size larger. To do this, she needs to straighten the baby's leg in the sleepsuit and look at the fabric of the romper. If it is stretched and pulls the infant's foot upward, it is time to switch to a larger size. You can also cut off the feet of this sleepsuit and continue using it.
If a footed sleepsuit is too small for the baby, it can worsen hypertonia, which is common in the first months after birth.
Are Swaddles Needed?
Traditionally, swaddling cloths are considered the main item of clothing for a baby in the first months of life. But modern mothers increasingly do not use them and choose sleepsuits or bodysuits right after birth.
There are many articles about the negative effect of tight swaddling on the formation of the hip joint and on motor development in general.
In short, tight swaddling is strongly not recommended. Loose swaddling in the first months can be justified when the baby sleeps restlessly and wakes themselves with their hands. In this case, cocoon swaddles can be used. They do not restrict the baby's movements, but at the same time do not let the baby wake themselves. However, after 3-4 months, it is necessary to move away from swaddles in favor of regular clothing.
Preventing Overheating and Conclusion
In addition to proper clothing and maintaining a comfortable temperature, it is important to know the signs of overheating: Watch your baby's sweating and skin: If you notice that your baby is sweating heavily, their skin becomes hot, or they become lethargic, these may be signs of overheating. In this case, immediately remove the blanket or clothing, ventilate the room and let your baby cool down.
In conclusion, creating a comfortable temperature and dressing newborns properly is not only a matter of convenience, but also of caring for your baby's health and safety. By following the recommendations of medical experts and adding a little humor to your parenting routine, you will create ideal conditions for the growth and development of your little family member. Let your home become a true palace for your baby!
And remember that laughter and joy always make parenting more enjoyable, but your child's safety must always come first.
